CATA Advocacy/CD Tax
Dear X,
Further to our previous advocacy alert on the "CD Tax",
the
Copyright Board will hold hearings this summer on
"private copying
levies" to be paid by manufacturers and distributors of
"blank audio
recording media". The artists have recommended a levy
of $2.50 on each
blank recordable CD. The Board will look at both the
level and reach of the levy.
There is a risk that the levy will be applied to all
CD-R's, whether they are used to record
music or not. High tech companies will have to pay the levy on all the CD's they use.
+++ Action Required: To ensure that this does not
happen, we must be able to show the
Copyright Board the non-musical uses of CD's, like software distribuution, product manuals,
catalogs, etc. There are no industry statistics, so we need your help to do
this.
Please answer the following questions:
1. CD use in 1998-
Inhouse reproduction - # Value $ % in
Canada
Contract reproduction - # Value $ % in
Canada
2. If a levy is applied to CD's, will you move
reproduction outside Canada?
What percentage?
To where?
3. Other Comments
PLEASE REPLY BY MAY 7.
ps we continue to expand CATA Alliance advocacy programs, including the mobilization of
industry contacts across Canada. Thanks
for your support.

7. addendum>>
"...Surrealism was not afraid to make for itself a tenet of total
revolt,
complete insubordination, of sabotage according to rule, and...it
still
expects nothing save from violence. The simplest Surrealist act
consists
of dashing down the street, pistol in hand, and firing blindly, as fast
as
you can pull the trigger, into the crowd."
